SHIFT~ performance salons

What are SHIFT~  performance salons?
SHIFT~ is an informal and intimate creative platform curated by Sharon Mansur and based in Winona, Mni Sota Makoce, Dakota homelands.
Indigenous land acknowledgment, information and resources

Initially hosted at Infinity Yoga Studio, SHIFT~ has nurtured the sparks of new interdisciplinary ideas, collaborations and experiments in dance, visual art, music, poetry, performance art and film since 2016.

The salons also are an invitation to engage in creative conversation, and further the  accessibility and visibility of contemporary art in the region.

SHIFT~ prioritizes Winona area BIPOC, LGBTQIA2S+, and/or female identified creatives.

What is a SALON?
A salon is a gathering, often in a private home, for creative exchange of art and ideas. The salon's roots go back to 15th century Italy, later flourishing throughout the 17th-19th centuries Europe, particularly in France where women hosted them as the salonniere.

The original intention was to bring diverse people together across social classes for open and equal engagement, and "promote a culture of creativity and collaboration.”

In the early 20th century A’lelia Walker, Zora Neale Houston and others brought together leading figures in African-American politics, art and literature. Mid-20th century salons in NYC and Hollywood were under scrutiny during the Red Scare.

And here we are today, where forums to encourage paradigm-shifting ideas and discussions are still very much needed.

What is Wayfinding?
Wayfinding is an ongoing collaborative project instigated by Sharon Mansur and Meryl Zaytoun Murman in 2022.
Wayfinding centers questions of home, place, and migration, as well as bodies of water and intersections between environment and social justice through a SWANA (Southwest Asian and North African) diasporic lens.
