We’ve chosen a trajectory as a form of expression, which accentuates a place by physically tracing a line through it. ~Francesco Careri, Walkscapes: walking as an aesthetic practice
tracings: a creative walking project
created by Sharon Mansur
This project started evolving in early 2023 as a curiosity. Exploring walking as a creative act, merging my love of the outdoors and art. Illuminating the art in the everyday. To harken back to my childhood wanderings and getting lost on purpose. To my Judson Church modern dance lineage. And connecting to a rich history of walking artists around the world. Paying closer attention to this universal pedestrian action. We ambulate from place to place, here and there, and through that simple process often find meaning in our lives, our landscapes and ourselves.

…the subject of walking is, in some sense, about how we invest universal acts with particular meanings. Like eating or breathing, it can be invested with wildly different cultural meanings, from the erotic to the spiritual, from the revolutionary to the artistic. ~Rebecca Solnit, Wanderlust: A History of Walking
This activity is made possible through a grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council in cooperation with a private foundation.
